Less than a month separates us from the beginning of the 2025 edition of the BioMARathon, a citizen science event that encourages people to actively participate in documenting marine and coastal biodiversity.
The first BioMARathon started in Catalonia (Spain) in 2021 and has since expanded tremendously and in 2024 was the first Portugal BioMARathon. This initiative generates valuable data for biodiversity research and mobilises local communities to get to know marine wildlife.
This year’s events will happen from 3rd May to 15th October, on the Portugal and Catalonian coasts. The aim is to capture as many as possible marine and coastal species. This way, people who have joined the event are improving their knowledge and understanding of nature and becoming part of the protection of biodiversity. The data collected is being stored and organised in the MINKA platform.

All those willing to participate in the Portugal edition of this year’s BioMARathon can join here.
During the 6 month span of the campaign, there are going to be a few organised group events for collecting data. Two have been announced in the COASTALWARMING platform:
