Marine Citizen Science with Diving Activities Across Catalonia

10 Jun 2025

During 2024–2025, the Catalan Federation of Underwater Activities (FECDAS) has been building and sustaining a strong, wide network of diving clubs and centres along the Catalan coast. Over this period, FECDAS has organised almost 100 activities - from biodiversity census dives and underwater photography workshops to training sessions in marine species identification, succengaging more than 850 participants.

These activities have resulted in almost 25,000 marine biodiversity observations uploaded to the MINKA citizen science platform  as part of the massive citizen science event BioMARato. Many participants have continued contributing new observations beyond the organised events, showing strong volunteer spirit and a growing culture of marine conservation.

Through consistent coordination, community engagement, and scientifically valuable data collection, FECDAS’s work in the last two years proves that recreational diving can be a powerful force for conservation - and that every dive can help protect the sea.

These event will continue trough the rest of 2025 and to stay updated, follow FECDAS on Instagram or visit their linktree.
